Wind turbines capable of supplying 14.500 households are being built in Kula and Vršac. By 2016, we could have around 300 megawatts of green energy on the grid.
More powerful wind turbines, the first of their kind in Serbia, will start turning in our country as early as next year, making it possible to halve electricity imports during the winter. After nearly a decade of preparations to build wind farms and around one billion euros in investment waiting at the country’s doorstep to be invested in this sector, wind power will finally begin to be used in 2016. We could therefore have 300 megawatts of this green energy on the grid as early as next year.
The installed capacity of the wind turbines is 9,9 megawatts, and the work is expected to be completed in October-November 2015. The facility will produce 27 million kilowatt-hours of green energy, enough to meet the needs of almost 8.000 households. Around 70 local workers are employed on this project, and Elektrovojvodina, along with five subcontractors, all from Serbia, took part in building the connections at the transformer station.
CALCULATION
To stop importing electricity during the winter, we need to accumulate around 500 megawatts from wind farms. That would allow us to meet our commitment to the European Energy Community, which we pledged to fulfill by 2020.
The advantage of wind farms is that two-thirds of their energy is produced during the winter, when electricity is also imported. Proper storage systems still need to be developed and put in place.
