Songs about Nova Crvenka

NOVA CRVENKA

A level field like the palm of your hand,
yellow sunflower heads raised high,
a cricket’s song wakes the early dawn,
gentle, heavenly rays have arrived.

A little path crosses the cracked plain,
and leaped toward the soft hill,
dawn follows the Morning Star,
to sail away on a heavenly river.

A tiny village sat on the hill,
the school bell can barely be heard,
the fertile field washed in dew,
a starling is hammering something on a utility pole.

Loneliness weighed on the House of Culture,
the bell tower, topped with a cross, stands high,
beneath it, the Solunac in bronze,
counts the ancient battles with pride.

Giants from glorious battles,
they built a nest in the middle of the plain,
the medals darkened, for deeds long past,
instead, others received the medals.

At the edge of the village, Mirkova Glavica,
here lie the bones of Thessaloniki’s heroes,
and behind it, an endless plain,
the proud legacy of young descendants.

That little village, that gentle hill,
where bones of steel lie,
I carry in my heart for all eternity,
dear God, forgive them their sins.
