Sports roundup

The past sports weekend featured several municipal derbies, and the handball derby drew the most attention, as the teams from Crvenka and Sivac faced off.

In the seventh round of the Super B League championship, Crvenka's handball players beat Sivac 36:27 in front of their own fans, with Crvenka leading 16:11 at halftime. The score was mostly even until the middle of the first half, after which Crvenka took advantage of several technical errors by Sivac and built a five-goal lead by the break. In the second half, Sivac took advantage of the home team's more relaxed play and, from a score of 20:14 in Crvenka's favor, went on a 6:0 run to level the score in the 42 minute, when it stood at 20:20. This equalizer galvanized Crvenka, who played better, defended more resolutely and attacked more effectively, resulting in a convincing win. Račić was Crvenka's top scorer with 10; Čabai scored 11 goals for Sivac, and Crvenka center back Bojan Mašić was named player of the match. After the match, we spoke with the coaches.

After seven rounds of the championship, Crvenka’s handball players are second in the standings with 11, while Sivac 69 are last with 2 points. In the next round, Crvenka travel to Subotica to play Spartak, while Sivac 69 host Hercegovac from Gajdobra.

Last weekend was unsuccessful for our women's handball teams. In the sixth round of the First League championship, the women's handball club Krule lost at home in Sivac to Železničar 2 from Inđija 29:22, with the visitors from Inđija leading 14:10 at halftime. The match was evenly balanced for the first twenty minutes or so, after which Železničar showed their quality, took the initiative and built a four-goal lead by halftime. In the second half, that lead continued to grow, and by the 34 minute Železničar had built a seven-goal advantage, which they managed to maintain. Jadranka Bikicki was Krule's top scorer with 5 goals. Our other First League team, Crvenka's Laki, lost 29:20 away to Mladost in Srpska Crnja, with the halftime score 18:10. Clearly, the winner of this match had been decided after the first half. Anđeli Lovre was Laki's top scorer, with 10 goals. The women's handball club Krule are currently fifth in the standings with 4 points, while Laki are eighth with 2 points. The next round features a municipal derby, as Laki and Krule meet in Crvenka.

Hajduk’s footballers drew 13 with Borac from Šajkaš at home in Kula in a match in round 0:0 of the Serbian League, Vojvodina group. Although the match ended goalless, it was an entertaining game with several chances to score. Hajduk’s players hit the post on a couple of occasions, and it seemed that the ball simply did not want to go into the net.

Hajduk's footballers are currently tenth in the standings with 18 points, and will visit Kabel in Novi Sad in the next round.

The thirteenth round of the Sombor District League championship featured a municipal derby. Crvenka hosted the league leaders Rusin from Ruski Krstur in front of their own fans and won the derby 2:0. Rusin coach Zlatko Sajanković said Crvenka deserved the win because they managed to punish two mistakes by his players. Milan Subotić scored from the penalty spot and Čvokić also scored for Crvenka. Hajduk’s basketball players defeated Železničar 83:73 away in Inđija in the sixth round of the Serbian Regional League, Northern Group; the halftime score was 48:32 in Hajduk’s favour. Hajduk coach Predrag Nogavica said that the win against the team that had been leading the standings before this round was primarily the result of his players attending training more regularly. He added that they shot well and rebounded well, and maintained a double-digit lead throughout. Although they were without Bogdanović in the third quarter, after he received an unsportsmanlike foul followed by a technical foul, the win was never in doubt. Five players scored in double figures, a testament to how well Hajduk played. Đurović was the top scorer with 18, Suvajdžić scored 15, captain Gagović 13, as did Stevanović, while Tešović scored 12 points for Hajduk. With a record of 4 wins and two losses, Hajduk share first place with three other teams. In the next round, they host Jedinstvo from Novi Bečej in front of their home fans.

In the fourth-round match of the First Vojvodina League, North Group, the Hajduk women’s volleyball team lost 3:0 away to CVS Elbrako Tehnolend in Sombor, with set scores of 25:11, 25:15 and 25:7. The defeat of Hajduk’s young players was no surprise, as CVS Elbrako Tehnolend leads the standings with a perfect record. Hajduk’s women are currently fourth in the standings with 6 points, and next round they travel to play Bečej, who have earned only one point so far this season.
