In Serbia’s political, cultural, and historical calendar, 15 and 16 February are the most important dates. On Candlemas, the First Serbian Uprising began in 1804; at the Candlemas Assembly in 1835, the Constitution of the Principality of Serbia—the first Serbian constitution and one of the most modern, democratic, and liberal constitutions of its time—was adopted. Its author was Dimitrije Davidović, and with it Serbia became the first country in the Balkans to abolish feudalism.
Kula Mayor Damjan Miljanić congratulated fellow residents on today’s occasion:
“On this day, 15 February 1804, the First Serbian Uprising began under the leadership of Karađorđe. The Candlemas Constitution was adopted in 1835, and it was Serbia’s first modern constitution.
Our ancestors won freedom for us, leaving us a legacy that we defend with heart and soul—our beautiful Serbia. They also left us a pledge to fight for a strong and modern country.
Only together and united, respecting our history, can we move forward!
Happy Sretenje!
Happy Serbian Statehood Day, Serbia!”
